Virtual Panel Discussion on El Nino Weather, Friday, June 16
Fri, 16 Jun 2023

There is an 80 percent change of El Nino forming by September (global average temperatures are hotter during El Nino events). While it’s unclear how severe it will be, there are some indicators it might be a strong one.
Indonesia is usually among the countries directly affected, with plantation and forest fires emerging in Sumatera and Kalimantan.
The national disaster management agency’s (BNPB’s) head of data, information and communication Abdul Muhari will share the latest update on Indonesia’s forecast of El Nino and its affected impacts on Sumatra and Kalimantan especially, which in the past haze from plantations there travelled across sovereign borders.
Asia Pulp & Paper’s GM for Fire Management Sujica Lusaka and Astra Agro Lestari’s Vice President Research & Development Cahyo Wibowo will share update on how much they are better prepared compared to the last major El Nino and fires episodes, how they are preparing to reduce fire risks and reduce the health impacts of smoke, and helping people cope with higher temperatures during El Nino.
Please join us for a lively discussion on the important weather pattern above.
