JFCC Panel discussion on Indonesia’s nickel boom and plans to be an EV battery hub

Wed, 31 Mar 2021

Dear members and friends,

Indonesia is one of the world’s biggest nickel producers but rather than simply export ore it is trying to move up the supply chain and become a global hub by using its rich natural resource to make batteries used in electric vehicles.

Indeed, the government has laid out ambitious plans starting from ore extraction, processing into metals and then making the chemicals used in batteries, and ultimately to build electric vehicles.

Southeast Asia’s biggest economy has already managed to transform into a major exporter of stainless steel and – if all goes to plan – nickel-related industries are even expected to surpass leading export earners like palm oil in coming years.

The sector is already attracting billions of dollars of investment from global companies seeking to invest early in a global-scale business opportunity.

Nonetheless, there are challenges ranging from how to attract the best global investors and address skill shortages, or to fairly share the earnings with the community and dispose of waste without damaging fragile environments.

Please join us for a what promises to be a fascinating discussion with some leading figures in the government and industry on this crucial industry for Indonesia.
